Bonnet contest, egg hunt also on tap in Shenandoah

SHENANDOAH - Traditionally, the borough celebrates the Easter season with an egg hunt.

But on Saturday, the Easter Bunny will also walk down North Main Street and he should have plenty of company.

"Downtown Shenandoah Inc. wants you to step into spring ... their first Easter parade," Kathleen R. Centiole, Upper Schuylkill Downtowns program coordinator, said.

There will also be an Easter bonnet contest.

DSI is the borough's downtown revitalization group and Upper Schuylkill is the umbrella revitalization organization that coordinates efforts in six northern Schuylkill boroughs.

Shenandoah officials, including Borough Manager Joseph L. Palubinsky, couldn't recall if there had ever been an official parade for the Easter holiday in town before.

"I really don't know," said Patrice K. Rader, Upper Schuylkill's executive director.

But DSI volunteers, including Mary R. Luscavage, DSI Promotions Committee chairwoman, said the parade is an excellent idea.

Other committee volunteers include Thomas F. O'Neill III, Leeann Sadusky, William S. Krash, Charles Calise, Helen O'Connell and Ann Taylor.

"We were at a meeting one night. We got together to see what the committee could do to promote the downtown and Downtown Shenandoah Inc. We wanted to do something different," Luscavage said. "Why Easter? I don't know of an Easter parade in the area," she added.

The event's official name is "A DSI Inc. Easter Celebration."
