ASHLAND - The parking lot between Community Banks and
the Ashland Highrise looked like a one-stop dealership for municipal
cleaning equipment Wednesday evening, and in a sense, that was almost
the case.
The equipment, which included a laser line painter
and sidewalk sweeper, was on display to show what the six Upper Schuylkill
Downtown communities will be using to make their respective boroughs
"Tidy Towns."
The unveiling was hosted by Upper Schuylkill Downtowns,
which purchased the equipment to help each municipality improve the
appearance of their downtown business districts. The "Tidy Towns"
program is just one revitalization effort being carried out by Ashland,
Frackville, Girardville, Mahanoy City, Ringtown and Shenandoah.
"This is our way of kicking off the 'Tidy Towns'
program for Upper Schuylkill," said USD Executive Director Patrice
K. Rader. "Upper Schuylkill is a regional Main Street program,
and the reason for the 'Tidy Towns' program is to promote 'Safe, Clean
and Green' in each of our communities in Upper Schuylkill."
Rader spoke to representatives from all six towns, including
elected officials, revitalization group members and the general public.
"Keeping our communities clean has a lot to do
with what we're all about, which includes bringing in new businesses,
retaining our current businesses and providing a better quality of
life for our residents and visitors," said Rader.
