GIRARDVILLE At its regular August meeting, Girardville
borough council approved a measure aimed at increasing local police
protection at times when it is most needed.
Council approved increasing officers wages to
$12 per hour for work on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays between
the hours of 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.
We hope this makes it more attractive for them
to work here instead of Ashland, Butler Township or Frackville,
explained Councilwoman Mary Beth Dougherty.
There are four part-time officers on the force. They
are paid between $9.50 to $10.50 an hour based on experience, according
to Dougherty. Last month officers worked a total of 65 hours but that
amount may be decreased due to the increase in pay. Dougherty noted
the times for which pay was increased were times local police coverage
is most in demand by residents.
There was some discussion of forming a Crime Watch organization
and Dougherty called on all local residents to take a more proactive
role in policing the borough.
The council also approved the tree project currently
underway by the Girardville PRIDE group. According to Councilman Joseph
Chiaretti, plans call for over 30 non-producing Cleveland pear trees
to be planted by the group in the business district of the borough
for beautification purposes.
Work will commence next month with eight trees being
planted in the first block of West Main St. Chiaretti plans to contact
the property owners where the purposed trees will be planted. Borough
workers will maintain the trees.
Additionally, Councilman Joseph Quinn reported on a
number of items being purchased for use by the six municipalities
of Upper Schuylkill including a sidewalk sweeper, line painter and
other equipment. He said eight large garbage receptacles will be given
to each municipality for placement in the downtown area.
The council agreed to participate in the county cleanup
scheduled for Sept. 27 through 29.
The American Legion was given permission to use
borough hall for a youth Halloween party on Oct. 27 from noon to 3
p.m.
