MAHANOY CITY Mahanoy Downtown Inc. is still looking
for applicants for the Upper Schuylkill Facade Improvement grants.
During Wednesday nights meeting, MDI President
James J. Rhoades Jr. announced that five or six applications have
been taken but none have been returned.
The Pennsylvania Regional Main Street Program provides
funding to local property and business owners to encourage restoration
projects of building facades. The program is designed to enhance the
buildings overall exterior appearance to help create an improved
central business district.
All six communities under the Upper Schuylkill umbrella,
Ashland, Frackville, Girardville, Mahanoy City, Ringtown and Shenandoah,
are eligible to participate in the program. A total of $90,000 split
evenly between the communities will be available for the improvements.
Upper Schuylkill offers reimbursement-matching grants
through Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Developments
Main Street Program funding. Design Challenge Grant funding must be
matched dollar-for-dollar by the property/business owner.
We need to get them rolling so we can get something
done this year, Rhoades said Wednesday.
Rhoades also announced the group has been invited to
represent Upper Schuylkill in the Penndemic Initiative on June 19
at the Pottsville Club.
Representatives from various emergency management and
health agencies will be on hand to register all volunteer organizations
to be able to mobilize in case of disaster.
Plans are also being finalized for the Night at The
Boardwalk event to be held from 3 to 8 p.m. June 30.
There will be food, games, entertainment, and a rock
climbing wall, HumVee and video games provided by the Hometown National
Guard, along with other fun things to do with a boardwalk feel.
Trish Wall said about 17 crafters have signed up along
with some food vendors.
We are getting a variety of food items but space
is still available and we would love to have more, Wall said.
Anyone interested in participating can call 773-2363.
The group is also sponsoring a Tiki Bar at the Elks
Lodge from 9 p.m. to midnight after the boardwalk event. Tickets for
this are $5 in advance or $8 at the door.
