Mahanoy City Boardwalk vows bigger, better event

BY LESLIE RICHARDSON

MAHANOY CITY — You may not be able to surf the waves on Saturday, but you can take a walk on the boardwalk.

Mahanoy Downtown Inc., the downtown revitalization group that is part of Upper Schuylkill Downtowns, will host the Mahanoy City Boardwalk in the heart of the downtown area, on Centre Street from Main to Catawissa streets.

“We have gotten much bigger this year, so we are extending the fun down to Service Electric parking lot,” organizer Trish Wall said Monday.

The event that began in 2005 was so successful that MDI hoped to make it an annual event.

Last year, the Flood of 2006 put a damper on the festivities when a large hole opened at Main and Vine streets. Water poured over the business district, flooding the historical society, downtown center, Service Electric and other homes and businesses in the area.

“So this year we had to come out and make it bigger and better since we missed a year,” Wall said.

The fun begins at 3 p.m. and will include games, dunk tank, moon bounce, bingo, face painting and other activities to keep families busy all day. There will also be about 20 crafters and vendors selling items.

“We really want to emphasize that this is a family event,” said Eric Lieberman, MDI vice president. “Just like the boardwalk at the shore, there is something to keep everyone in the family entertained.”

There will be no shortage of food as local and out-of-town vendors set up stands in both the Service Electric and Wachovia Bank parking lots.

While trying burgers, barbecue, hot dogs, french fries, ice cream, caramel apples and other traditional summer foods, people will be entertained by the UNICO Band and the Pennsylvania Good Times Band. The “Big Yellow Sponge,” a magician and the Coal Cracker Cheerleaders will also be on hand.

MDI T-shirts and other MDI items will also be available.

“The weather is going to be great. Wear your beach attire and come have fun,” said Kathy Leahy, an event organizer.

At 9 p.m., the over-21 crowd can meet at the Elks Lodge on East Centre Street for a Tiki Bar featuring DJ Kristen.

“There will be prizes and giveaways,” Wall said. “It will be a great way to end the day.”

The $5 advance tickets will be available during the boardwalk event, from any MDI member or by calling 773-2363.
