MAHANOY CITY - The borough's revitalization group is
planning for summer fun.
Mahanoy Downtown Inc. is firming up plans for its Mahanoy City Boardwalk
event.
Last year's event was canceled because of the Flood
of 2006 in late June, which affected the downtown.
"This year will be bigger and better," MDI
President James Rhoades Jr. said during Wednesday's meeting.
The event is planned for June 30 and will take place
on West Centre Street from the Downtown Center building to Wachovia
Bank. The group is looking for all types of vendors. The cost will
be $25 for a 10-foot space.
Also being planned is a community-wide yard sale that
will be May 19. A $5 charge is required to have a location placed
on the official yard sale map.
Plans for Upper Schuylkill Homecoming Weekend during
Labor Day weekend are also beginning to take shape.
The group decided a cocktail party featuring pianist
Kim Russell Seibert will be held at Smith Mansion on Aug. 31, with
entertainment provided by local author Loretta Murphy and the Ashland
Theater Group at the Mahanoy City Elks to follow.
The Upper Schuylkill Downtowns Design Challenge Grant
Program is also set to start in the borough.
Upper Schuylkill Downtowns, the umbrella organization
under which Mahanoy City, as well as Ringtown, Girardville, Shenandoah,
Ashland and Frackville, that is taking steps to bring life into the
downtown section of these communities, received a $90,000 DCED grant
that was divided equally among the six boroughs.
MDI has received $15,000 for facade improvements.
