MAHANOY CITY People in six northern Schuylkill
County boroughs are being advised to get brooms and dustpans ready
for the Tidy Town contest.
Patrice K. Rader, executive director of the umbrella
revitalization group Upper Schuylkill Downtowns, announced Wednesday
that the contest, aimed at picking the cleanest community in the Upper
Schuylkill fold, will be held on Aug. 8.
According to Rader, judging by representatives of the
Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development and
Pennsylvania Downtown Center will take place all day with an award
ceremony to be held at 6 p.m. at the Mahanoy Downtown Center, Centre
and Main streets.
The winning town will receive $1,000 and possession
of the Tidy Town traveling trophy, Rader said. The goal
is to promote clean, green and charm.
The judges will examine the designated downtown areas
of Upper Schuylkill participants, including Ashland, Frackville, Girardville,
Mahanoy City, Ringtown and Shenandoah boroughs.
Weather permitting, our judges will walk around
your designated downtown district. If it rains, they will do a windshield
survey, Rader said. Each town will be judged using a litter
count and on general appearance.
The judges will be looking for gutter and sidewalk weeds,
cigarette butts, glass, metal, plastic, paper and other debris, she
added.
Last year, the contest was judged during the Labor Day
weekend, with the winning borough Frackville announced
prior to the ABA/Mummers Parade.
