SHENANDOAH Travel the world during the Upper
Schuylkill Homecoming Weekend and enjoy popular cuisines while never
having to leave Schuylkill County.
Downtown Shenandoah Inc., the boroughs revitalization
group, will host Savor the Flavors of the World from noon
to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 2. Six participating restaurants will take
you to Greece, Italy, Eastern Europe, Mexico, China and the good ol
USA for classic dishes without the need of a passport, airline ticket
or baggage check.
DSI Promotions Committee Chairperson Mary Luscavage,
who will take on the position of Main Street Program manager in September,
said the culinary smorgasbord was the perfect way for Shenandoah to
celebrate the second Homecoming Weekend.
This is very unique, said Luscavage. This
idea came up basically came up because of the ethnicity of the town.
We wanted to focus on that this year. The restaurants are well known
and bring people into town. So we went to restaurants individually
and asked them to come up with a menu.
When the idea was brought to the restaurants, Luscavage
said the owners loved the chance to show off their particular specialties.
They all loved the idea. And were going
to have music with it. They will pipe music outdoors, she said.
The Oyster Bar will have live music by Sweet Caroline
and the Oystermen, who performed at the 2006 Homecoming event
in Shenandoah.
Each restaurant will also have a doll from the Parade
of Nations float that matches the ethnicity of the restaurant.
People can go to one restaurant for an hors doeuvres,
another for a main course, another one for soup, and continue on until
they visit all, said Luscavage. Diners can eat indoors or al
fresco while listening to ethnic music.
The cuisines include:
