‘Savor the Flavors’ with great Shenandoah international cuisine

BY JOHN E. USALIS, Editor - Schuylkill Saturday/News Item

08/25/2007

SHENANDOAH — Travel the world during the Upper Schuylkill Homecoming Weekend and enjoy popular cuisines while never having to leave Schuylkill County.

Downtown Shenandoah Inc., the borough’s revitalization group, will host “Savor the Flavors of the World” from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 2. Six participating restaurants will take you to Greece, Italy, Eastern Europe, Mexico, China and the good ol’ USA for classic dishes without the need of a passport, airline ticket or baggage check.

DSI Promotions Committee Chairperson Mary Luscavage, who will take on the position of Main Street Program manager in September, said the culinary smorgasbord was the perfect way for Shenandoah to celebrate the second Homecoming Weekend.

“This is very unique,” said Luscavage. “This idea came up basically came up because of the ethnicity of the town. We wanted to focus on that this year. The restaurants are well known and bring people into town. So we went to restaurants individually and asked them to come up with a menu.”

When the idea was brought to the restaurants, Luscavage said the owners loved the chance to show off their particular specialties.

“They all loved the idea. And we’re going to have music with it. They will pipe music outdoors,” she said.

The Oyster Bar will have live music by “Sweet Caroline and the Oystermen,” who performed at the 2006 Homecoming event in Shenandoah.

Each restaurant will also have a doll from the “Parade of Nations” float that matches the ethnicity of the restaurant.

“People can go to one restaurant for an hors d’oeuvres, another for a main course, another one for soup, and continue on until they visit all,” said Luscavage. Diners can eat indoors or al fresco while listening to ethnic music.

The cuisines include:

American at the Oyster Bar, 113 N. Main St. Specializing in East Coast seafood, steaks and of course oysters. Listen to live performances by “Sweet Caroline and the Oystermen” as they perform 60s & 70s hits.

Greek at Vernalis Restaurant, 32 S. Main St. Featuring Spinach and Orzo Soup, Greek Bean Soup, Spanakopita, Greek Chicken Kabobs, Athenian Chicken, Gyros and Pastitsio. The music will make you think of the sunny Mediterranean.

Italian at Luna’s DiMaggio, 28 N. Main St. Try the Clams Casino or Fresh Calamari Fritti for starters. Featuring Baked Specialties, Seafood, Pastas and superb Gourmet Pizzas. End with delicious Italian desserts or Italian Ice. The music will make you want to dance the “Tarentella!”

Eastern European at Lyric Restaurant, 33 W. Centre St. Hungry for halushki, halupki and kielbasi? Then this is the place to be. Served al fresco to the accompaniment of polka music that is sure to make diners want to get up and dance.

Mexican La Casita de Familia, 8 E. Centre St. Serving a full range of authentic Mexican and Tex-Mex dishes from Enchiladas to Sincronisadas, Tamales and Tacos served in the finest family atmosphere. Listen to that Mariachi band music.

Chinese at Ming Guan Restaurant, 18 S. Main St. Specializing in Cantonese and Mandarin cuisine served in authentic Oriental fashion with musical accompaniment.

While visiting Shenandoah, don’t forget to visit the Pennsylvania Anthracite Miners Memorial, Main and Washington streets; the new Shenandoah Area Historic Society building, 201 S. Main St.; and the Schuylkill Historic Fire Society Museum, 105 S. Jardin St., open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
