RINGTOWN The borough council agreed Monday to
help fund a Main Street Ringtown project that could greatly increase
the safety and attractiveness of the downtown area.
The council voted at its meeting to give $500 toward
engineering design and contract administration fees for a streetscape
project sought by the revitalization group in conjunction with municipalities
involved with Upper Schuylkill Downtowns Inc.
Borough engineer Jacqueline Peleschak, Alfred Benesch
& Co., said the project would include sidewalk and curb improvements
on the south side of Main Street from Center to Market not
including the fire companys driveway area and from Giorgios
Pizza Shop to Yost Street on the north side.
The projects projected cost is $100,000, and funding
is being sought through a grant with Upper Schuylkill.
Council President Julian Milewski said that the revitalization
group has the means to fund the majority of the projected $17,100
of the projects initial engineering design phase. Councils
action covered the shortfall for these costs.
In other business, progress has been made on the cooperative
police agreement with the borough and Union Township. Law and Order
Committee members John Wasilewski, Thomas Murray and Burton Hetherington
and other borough officials have been invited to meet with township
representatives at 6:30 p.m. March 4 to discuss the matter.
Council granted the borough engineer permission to work
with a developer to explore the possibility of adding 15 homes to
the boroughs water supply system. Milewski said this is an effective
way to gain revenue for the system.
Plans call for the development of the 15 homes along
Shenandoah Road in Union Township near Murray Meadows. Council would
require that the developer would be responsible for all work necessary
to connect the homes to the system.
