SHENANDOAH A $400,000 grant may allow the completion
of the boroughs streetscape program.
During Tuesdays Downtown Shenandoah Inc. meeting,
President Val Macdonald announced that the group is eligible to apply
for a Department of Community and Economic Development Reinvestment
grant since the group was admitted to the Main Street Program.
We can apply for anywhere between $250,000 to
$500,000 but we need matching funds to reinvest in the community,
Macdonald said. The borough has $400,000 from PennDOT to continue
the streetscape program that we can use for the match.
Macdonald said the boroughs money would cover
the cost of improving two stretches of Main Street, one from Lloyd
Street to Coal Street and the other from Oak Street to Cherry Street.
Work on Main Street from Lloyd Street to Cherry Street was already
completed. With DSIs anticipated funds, the project could be
continued from Coal to Washington Street and Cherry to Poplar.
Additionally, being a member of Upper Schuylkill, the
group would also qualify for $50,000 from the grant the umbrella group
would apply for.
Downtown Manager Mary Luscavage said $5,000 of the Upper
Schuylkill funds would be used for a gazebo; $7,000 for welcome signs
and landscaping; and $38,000 for engineering and design fees.
The deadline to apply for the grant money is March
1.
