SHENANDOAH A bowl of soup can invigorate the
body and the community.
Downtown Shenandoah Inc. will sponsor a soup sale at
11 a.m. Jan. 17 at its 116 N. Main St. headquarters.
A variety of soup will be available, with chowder from
Mikes Seafood, pizza soup from Lyric Restaurant and a Greek
soup from Vernalis Restaurant among the offerings. Other homemade
varieties, including chili and pasta fagioli, will also be available
in quart- or pint-sized takeout containers.
This is the perfect time of year for soup. We
are always looking for new ways to increase our fundraising efforts,
said Mary Luscavage, DSI manager.
The soup sale coincides with the current hoagie sale.
Coupons for hoagies from The Pizza Shop are available
for $5 at the DSI office and are good until March.
Proceeds from all DSI fundraisers go toward the boroughs
matching funds that are used for downtown revitalization.
Through DSIs efforts, Shenandoah was the first
of the Upper Schuylkill Downtown boroughs to gain acceptance into
the Main Street program.
DSI was approved for Year 2 and Year 3 funding in the
program by the state Department of Community and Economic Development
in April. The approval is part of the funding structure of Pennsylvania
Downtown Center for the groups revitalization efforts.
DSIs goal of a Return to Prominence
for Shenandoah is its ongoing capital campaign theme, and the group
is hoping to attract some new members.
During a recent meeting, DSI President Val Macdonald
spoke about the need to build the revitalization effort with workers
from the business community.
